At April 26, 2010 meeting Gary Moore gave a presentation about his father's odessey. This riveting story of his father, a depression-era youth and his brush with destiny through World War II and the hardships of minor league baseball intriqued us all. The author only learned the day before his father died about his father's remarkable life, when he broke decades of silence and relieved himself of the heavy burden he had carried. The stunning news sent the author on his own odyssey as he researched his father's life.

Last year we had a program featuring a cello/piano duo, Marina Hoover and Patricia Tao. Well, they also have a trio called Trio Voce, which includes Jasmine Lin on violin. We remember that their performance at the Club was so exciting and engaging that we all wanted them back. The trio is associated with several local musical organizations, one of which is http://mostlymusicchicago.com, which features individual North Shore residences as hosts for several intimate concerts. They are also playing January 30, 2010, as part of Unity Temple's Art and Architecture series.

Fundamentalism & Religious Violence
with Dennis Temple

Fundamentalism first appeared in early 20th century America as an offshoot of conservative Protestantism but has become a mainstay of international politics as the century progressed. This presentation begins with the platform of early Christian fundamentalism and offers an assessment of how it fared over the past 100 years. The program continues with an examination of other religious expressions of fundamentalism, particularly Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam. The program ends with an open, but guided, discussion of fundamentalism as a rejection of modernity and how that can lead to radicalism and violence.

Recorded Monday, October 16, 2006 at The Nineteenth Century Club
